Cam chat means one-to-one webcam chat

It is worth separating from the neighbouring things it gets confused with. Cam chat is a two-way conversation: both people have a camera and both are participants. That is different from a broadcast, where one person is on camera and everyone else watches, and different from a group room, where the conversation is shared between several people at once. Getting your webcam working

Almost every failed cam chat is one of five things, and none of them are exotic.

• The permission prompt was dismissed or blocked. Browsers only ask once — after that you have to re-allow the camera in the site settings for the page.
• Another app already has the camera. Video call apps hold onto it in the background; close them and reload.
• The wrong camera is selected. Laptops with an external webcam plugged in often default to the built-in one.
• The page is not on HTTPS. Browsers refuse camera access on insecure origins, so a camera cannot start there at all.
• Hardware privacy shutter or a hardware kill switch. It is more common than it sounds, and it looks exactly like a broken camera.

Cam to cam — what the other person actually sees

They see your live camera feed and whatever is behind you. They do not see your name, email address or any profile, because Nightcap does not collect one. Two practical habits go a long way: check your background before you start — a webcam picks up far more of the room than you think — and assume that anything on camera could be captured at the other end. That is true of every cam chat platform, and it is the reason the background blur exists.

Cam chat without showing your face

You do not have to be fully on display to use it. Background blur runs in real time in your own browser, so the blurring happens before the video is sent rather than at the far end. Beauty mode and six colour filters are processed the same way. And if you would rather not be on camera at all, text-only chat is part of the same product — you can be matched and hold the whole conversation without a webcam.

Cam chat on a phone

A phone is a perfectly good cam chat device, and it is how most people use this kind of site. The front camera is the sensible default. Two phone-specific things worth knowing: the browser will ask for camera and microphone permission separately from anything you allowed before, and a call will keep running on cellular data but will use a lot of it, so Wi-Fi is the better choice on a metered plan.

Moderation and the age gate
